Scafell Pike
3,210 feet, Highest peak in England
October 23, 2006
The second of the three
peaks that Ian has been able to climb with friends from 3 RMP. After
climbing Snowdon in Wales at 3,560 ft (see summer events 2006 page on the
Sunday drives page) this trip was planned to take us to the "top" of
England. Unfortunately it was a foggy day in the Lakes District
National Park so the views were not as perfect as we wanted (on a clear day
they say you can see the Isle of Man from the top of Scafell Pike) but we
had a great time anyway.
We started off from Seathwaite
south towards our destination. No, that peak is not Scafell Pike, it
is Seathwaite Fell, only 1,971 feet high, a mear hill..
Off we go on a muddy path enjoying
the first part before the ascent begins
A beautiful ray of sunshine greets
us as we head up, up towards the peak of Great End a the top of this photo
The tops of the peaks in the Lakes
District look make you feel like you are walking on the moon, jagged rock
and bolder as far as you can see, which wasn't far for us on this foggy
day...
A pause to rest among the rocks,
Ian is is in the middle with all the NCOs around him
Really treacherous climbing (just
kidding) This photo of Ian's sergeant major was posed for photographic
effect (turn your monitor on it's right side now to see what the
photographer saw)
Success! Ian at the marker of the
official top of the peak of Scafell Pike

Ian at the top with
Broad Cragg behind him as the clouds break for a second

A view to show you
how rough the terrain is at the top of the mountain
The whole group of Royal Military
Police display the colors at the top!
Ian and the Regt Sergeant Major
wonder down the hill after leaving the rocks and moving back on to the
grassy area
A break on the way down
Now that is a gorge!
Showing off as we crossed the
streams...
Ian and his operations sergeant
major, the real hill walking leader of the group, enjoy a stroll by Styhead
Tarn (that means the lake next to us in some old English language). On
from there back to the car for a shower, and a nice warm meal at where
else...a proper English pub!
