Winter Solstice at Stonehenge

21 December 2005

On the cold morning of December 21st we got up early and headed to Stonehenge to spend part of an hour with the druids enjoying the Winter Solstice sunrise.  Unfortunately it was a bit foggy that day so we could not see the sun as it broke the horizon but we enjoyed the time in this place that has been around almost since the beginning of time...over 5,000 years.

Lead probably by a druid, the crowd does some morning chants and becomes one with the earth.

The winter solstice is only one of two days a year that people are allowed to actually go into the circle of stones.

A little foggy that morning which didn't help up see the sun rise but it did make for neat photos.

Yes we were really there as the sun rises behind us.

A neat photo with one of the station stones in the foreground.

These photos were taken around 11:00 am on December 26th when we visited with our guests.  Stonehenge looking to the east.  The stones you see here are actually the inter ring since the outer ring on this side is missing after years of damage and removal.

Looking north where most of the stones are missing or moved.  This is the view you get from the main road that goes by Stonehenge.  On the tallest stone you can see a point at the top, this is what they used to interlock the the cross stones (lintels) to the upright stones.
