Autumn 2005
drives around England

Here are some photos of the Saturday or Sunday drives that we have taken to villages around England this fall.  Hopefully you too will enjoy them and be able to get a sense of how wonderful it is to be a visitor in England that is fortunate enough to get to live here for a while.

Cheddar Gorge

One county away in Somerset is the village of Cheddar (yes, like the cheese).  It is basically in a gorge that you can see in the photos and of course it is where they make cheese of a certain flavor.  You can get your own at the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company too.

The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is a neat attraction.  For a couple of British pounds you can take a tour and see how cheese is made and when it ends you are where else...in a store full of Cheddar cheese.

Some basic facts for you about the cheese making process.

This master cheese maker is actually rotating the cheese so that it can settle properly right after it has initially been cut.

Here are some different Cheddars that have matured for different lengths of time.

Also in the town of Cheddar is a beautiful little stream which is the base of the gorge.  You walk along it as you go from store to store.

The stream has a really neat waterfall at about the halfway point of the town.

If this photo is too small to read it the sign on the building says it is an orginal Cheddar Gorge house.  I bet it is hundreds of years old.

The beautiful view of the Cheddar Gorge landscape.

Lots of rocks and rough terrain.  A bit of a change from the Cotswolds that are just down the road.
