Salzburg continued

The Salzburg cathedral or Domplatz shown on the right of this picture is one of the primary buildings in this small town of 150,000 people.

It is a very beautiful cathedral and has been rebuilt and consecrated three times (the years 774, 1628 and 1959) because of fire or bombs in war.

An very artistic shot of the interior of the dome taken by Susan.

Outside the cathedral is Mozartplatz where this bad statue of Mozart overlooks ice skaters on this day.

The most dominating and recognizable feature of Salzburg has to be the fortress or Festung Hohensalzburg that towers over the town.

A beautiful photo of the fortress at night.

Up on the ramparts of the fortress you can enjoy a warm mulled wine, called Glühwein, with mom and Ian.

Looking out from the southwest of the fortress you see the beginning of the Alps and the tallest mountain near Salzburg - the Untersburg.

Susan and her mom warm up with Glühwein with a beautiful sunset over the Untersburg.

One of our highlights of the trip was being able to hear some Mozart in this land of wonderful classical music.  We did this at a concert in the fortress where they played Hornkonzert D-Dur KV 412 and Sinfonia da camera for Alphorn and Streicher.  You can see the Alphorn in the second photo here where the player has changed from his suit (worn while playing the french horn) to Lederhosen to play this traditional instrument.  He was also impressive since he introduced the Alphorn and music in not just German and English but also Japanese.
