  Belgium & Luxembourg

April 2006

We spent time in four cities in Belgium - Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp and Ypres.
Here is the square in Brussels where we stopped for the mandatory Belgian beer and some chocolate.

Steen Castle in Antwerp

The square in Bruges as seen from the bell tower

Us in front of the Bruges bell tower at the river that runs through the town.

A carriage ride for the lady.  The guy must be English with a hat like that!!

The beautiful old city of Ypres.  Everything in this city has been rebuilt as it was all completely destroyed during the fighting of WWI.

Part of the 'Fields of Flanders' museum in Ypres.  This exhibit depicts the famous "Christmas Truce" on Christmas Eve 1914 when for a couple of days during World War I British and German troops shouted Christmas greetings, sang carols, and even exchanged Christmas gifts across No Man's Land.  Amazing story.

Actual trenches near Ypres where millions of men fought and died during the early 1900s.

The US Military cemetery in Luxembourg

A photo of the captain and a former great general, George S. Patton, just to make John happy that we could find it.
