Oregon

March 2005

During our west coast train trip that eventually went all the way to Washington state we had our first stop in Portland, Oregon to see the sights of the city as well as the Oregon coast. We were hosted during these three days by Susan's good friend Susanna

On the day we drove to the Oregon coast we went to the Ecola State Park and then south to Cannon Beach

Another shot of the coast, looking south, from Ecola State Park on a cloudy day.  We were looking for wales with the volunteer wale watcher but we unfortunately had no confirmed sightings

On the way towards the coast, while driving on US 26 we stopped for lunch at a restaurant called Camp 18 which used to be an old logger camp and had old train cars around it

Also during our drive along US 26 we stopped to look at the "World’s Largest Sitka Spruce." More than 215 feet high, almost 16 feet in diameter, and thought to be over 700 years old. This is also believed to be the largest tree of any species in the state of Oregon

Throughout the entire trip we had wonderful meals (and are paying for it now).  Here we are eating at the Portland City Grill that is over 20 stories above the city and gives a wonderful view of the city and the Willamette River

Here we enjoy a taste of Widmers microbrews.  Ian would try the sampler with 5-7 small beers then if there was time enjoy a full glass.  Drop Top is the recommended brew from Widmers.  It also has a catchy label -- a dog with his ears blowing in the breeze since the top is droped

Susan and Susanna spent the first day in Portland enjoying the luxurious life and pampering themselves with a manicure and a chocolate pedicure (whatever that is?).  Ian on the other hand was forced to spend almost five hours at Powell's bookstore during this afternoon.  Surprisingly he spent less than $100 there when they returned to him.

Here was our first night in town. We visited three local breweries, and Susanna called up an expert in this area to assist, her friend Nate.  He took us to McMenimins Blue Note on 23rd for dinner (and a beer), then to Widmers,  and the lastly to The Lucky Lab!

After our dinner overlooking Portland from the Portland City Grill we took a cab to Vault, a martini bar where we had to chose from hundreds of martinis, not an easy task as we soon learned.

Susan and Susanna enjoyed an afternoon in the Portland Rose Garden.  Since Portland is "The City of Roses" we found that it was a very beautiful place even though they were just beginning to bloom.  Here Susan and Susanna sit near Shakespeare who states "Of all flowers, me thinks Rose is best."

Finally during our short three day stay in Portland we tried to keep up with the residents of this Pacific northwest city by drinking our share of coffee.  We visited no less than 4 different coffee shops, Coffee People, Tully's, and Java Man... here we enjoy a cup of Stumptown Coffee Rosters brew of the day.  We probably only left Island Joe's and Peet's for a future trip, and we chose to skip Starbucks here since we would shortly be in the home of the original (see our Washington page).
