  Christmastime

 in England

Our first visitors from the US have come to bless our home during this holiday season.  Gloria and Alice were here for two weeks and we spent  days at Windsor Castle, Chawton & Winchester, our Christmas Eve at a wonderful Evensong service at the Salisbury Cathedral and the last few days of the trip in the mandatory London.   Of course we have also enjoyed a couple of meals at some wonderfully traditional English pubs.

Enjoy, we can't wait for you to visit!  There are already some of Ian's family scheduled for Summer 06 so more photos to be posted soon!

The three queens enter Windsor Castle through the St. George gate.

Walking through the middle ward passage to the center of the castle grounds

Enjoying sunset in front of the Round Tower.

Susan and Mom in front of Buckingham Palace during the Changing of the Guard.

The Salisbury Cathedral as the sun sets on Christmas Eve...Beautiful.

Taking photos of yourself looking goofy and trying to make up for it by standing beside your beautiful wife...priceless.

Susan and Aunt Alice enjoy a drink at the Haunch of Venison pub in Salisbury that was built in 1320.  It has a one piece pewter bar top, believed to be the only one of its kind in England.

Mom and Ian enjoy a drink in the "Horsebox," this small part of the bar is reputedly used by Churchill and Eisenhower during the planning of the D-Day landings.

One of the favorite British authors of the ladies is Jane Austen, so we visited the home where she penned Sense & Sensibility.

A much better view of the old Victorian home.

Thatched roofed homes like this one next to Jane Austen's are what you find in southern England.

We also visited the old Roman city of Bath.  Here is the beautiful Bath Chapel.

The Pump Room and Roman baths are inside this building.

Inside the Bath Chapel is beautiful and one of the first Cathedrals/Chapels that is very light.

Some of the beautiful stained glass.

The crescent in Bath.  You can see the Roman architecture here.

Some neat old apartments in Bath.  Don't even ask if you could afford to live in them, quite expensive.

The Guards band leaves Buckingham Palace after the Guard has been changed.

Before the Changing of the Guard is the Inspection of the Guard.  Here at the Horse Guards Barracks on Whitehall members of the Blues & Royals (in Blue capes) and the Lifeguards (Red Capes) get inspected.

The Lifeguards.

Merry Christmas from all of us in England!
